Have you checked the highlights of CES 2018? If you haven’t, then let me tell you what new has been revealed in the CES that held earlier this year. Hulu teased a new addition to its live TV streaming service. This new addition is going to be a new Live TV guide that will be added to Hulu app.
With this app, viewers will be able to browse the programs that are currently being aired on Hulu. This feature is similar to what we see in a cable TV guide. Hulu has made a statement after the conference in which the company told that they are not just launching this new guide, but new Live TV destination in Hulu app across its living room platforms.
Hulu Account is looking to increase its viewership with these features, as other streaming services were also able to increase their viewership, so Hulu is expecting the same.
Hulu has been able to determine as to what the majority of users are watching in their live TV product, i.e., ‘on-demand’. 46% of the usage is Live whereas 54% of usage is on-demand. In Live TV, most of the viewers are watching sports and news.
Apart from trying to switch viewers from on-demand programming to Live TV, the company also believes that the Live TV experience is crucial to Hulu because a lot of eyeballs stick to Hulu for watching Live TV.
Hulu issued a statement during Upfronts Presentation that was held in New York in April 2018 that most of the viewers on its service take place in the TVs that are connected in the living rooms. The percentage is touching 78%, which is extremely high.
Hulu believes that viewers are going to prefer on-demand programming to some extent, which is a matter of worry for the company as it has a limited discovery of live TV in some niches.
The Vice-President of the company has said in a statement that, ‘we have heard one thing in particular from the users that it is difficult at times for the users to see what’s going on another channel, or it’s difficult to flip between two channels that they are watching at the same time.’
Hulu has started testing Live TV guide and destination on its beta website last year, and they have noticed that users are extremely interested in this way of browsing live programming.
Users can enjoy these features across a wide range of living room devices such as Apple TV (4th Gen and Higher), Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Amazon Fire TV (1st & 2nd Gen).
There are a number of notable things in the updated Hulu interface, but there is one thing that will catch your eye, i.e., the lightning bolt icon that is given the right to the Home icon. This icon will take you to the live playback on the channel that you’ve most recently watched.
Users will also get the option to pull up the new guide while they watch their favorite content on Live TV to see what’s going to come up next or they can change channels in between as well.
Users are given the power to personalize this guide by sorting by ‘recent channels’ or ‘all channels’, with the former one displaying the last 10 channels they have watched. Users can easily set programming to record to Cloud DVR offered by Hulu or begin shows from the start if there are shows that they want to record. Hulu activate is confident that the new guide is going to be available on room devices as of now, but will come to other platforms in the near future.
